ABOUT

The Short Fuse podcasts are conversations with artists, writers, musicians, poets, curators, playwrights, and others whose work and advocacy reveal our communities through their lens and stir us to seek change.

After a memorial service for the Reverend Desmond Tutu, we were in conversation with South African photojournalists Eric Miller and Sumaya Hisham when their work was on view at the South African Cultural Center in the exhibition Desmond Tutu: Then and Now. Eric’s striking black and white images of Rev. Tutu were taken during the period of apartheid. Samaya’s color photographs portray Rev. Tutu after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, the release of Nelson from prison and the end of apartheid.

We were in conversation with Massimiliano Gioni, the Edlis Neeson Artistic Director of the New Museum, to talk about the exhibition Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning. The exhibition was conceived of and influenced by the late Okwui Enweza, before his death.  Enweza’s influence continues.

We traveled to Louisville, Kentucky for a conversation with  Stephen Reily, the director of the Speed Museum. He spent an afternoon guiding us through the exhibition Promise, Witness, Remembrance, which reflected on and celebrated the life of Breonna Taylor.

We asked Kyle Dacuyan, who writes poems, makes performances, and is the executive director of the Poetry Project at St. Marks in the Bowery Church, “what is poetry” and “who is a poet?
